Hour of Leisure, Edition 01

There's a version of your day that starts before the to-do list does.

It's the hour where nothing is urgent. Where you're not "optimizing" anything. Where the only question is what you may want for lunch or whether the book is good enough to stay outside for another chapter.

That's the hour we're building around here at Club Recess. An hour a day of leisure or play. It's our design brief. It's the reason our fabric doesn't look like a gym uniform even though it performs like one. It's the reason we care about what you're wearing when you show up and what you're wearing when you stay after.

This is Edition 01. If you're reading this, you found us at the start of a very important new chapter. Each edition is a snapshot of what's keeping us grounded, inspired, and having fun — and an invitation for you to do the same.

The playlist

Every edition starts here. The playlist is the mood before anything else is decided.

This month's is Clubhouse FM. 21 tracks that sound like golden hour on the patio after doubles. Fleetwood Mac into Drake into Mazzy Star. We have this on while we play, or at dinner parties, or in the car to Whole Foods.

Give it a whirl.

The drink

A Paloma spritz. Maybe the perfect early summer drink. We find that it has the magical power to mentally transport you somewhere warm.

Ghia golden hour spritz

Our recipe:

  • Two ounces of your favorite tequila blanco (we are loving women-owned La Gritona)
  • Half an ounce of Aperol
  • Grapefruit juice, fresh if you have it, Jarritos if you don't
  • A splash of soda
  • Salt on the rim, or Tajin

Have one, share with friends, don't forget to cheers.

The book

This month we are reading Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke — held copy

You've probably already seen it everywhere already. Anne Hathaway posted about it, the NYT Book Club picked it up, and for good reason. Here's why we love it: it's a book about the performance of a life versus the living of one. About the gap between what looks beautiful online and what's actually happening at the kitchen table.

It's sharp, it's a page-turner, and it'll make you think about the version of yourself you show people.

Read it on the court. Read it after. Just read it before someone spoils the ending for you.

The challenge

Every month we are inviting ourselves to build a habit to better our minds. This month: One hour a day with no screen.

We hope you are already doing this, but for the busy days where you have a ton going on, it can be hard. Find one hour where the phone stays in the bag. We aren't asking you to meditate or journal, although those are also great habits. Maybe go outside. Hit a ball. Stare at the sky and think about absolutely nothing.

Notice what fills the space when you stop filling it yourself.

Where we're playing

We're spending the summer where the sun is. Our team is spread across the country, here's where we are playing:

Bobby Riggs Racket & Paddle Club — San Diego. The perfect old-school club energy.

Eastside Paddle Club — Austin. Indoor/outdoor, social vibe, East Austin hang.

CityPickle at Wollman Rink — NYC, Central Park. 14 courts in the most iconic park in the country.

And for everything that happens after the match, we've personally been living in Dua Lipa's Google list. It's a cool-girl guide for the "after" part of the hour, and it has some really great global picks.

What we're wearing

The Ringer Tee. We are actually living in it. It's super soft and super comfy and our go-to for errands or coffees. We can't wait to share what's next though, you're going to love it.

What we're looking forward to

Roland Garros is happening right now and we can't stop watching. There's something about clay court tennis that makes everything feel timeless. The red dust, the all-white outfits getting dirty, the drama. We'll be glued to it through the final.

And then Wimbledon starts June 30. The grass. The strawberries. The outfits. If you need us the first two weeks of July, we'll be courtside (on our couch, but spiritually courtside).

Closer to home: we're counting down to June 23. Something we've been building for over a year is about to see the light of day. We're not saying more than that here. But if you're a Club Rewards member, you've already seen a glimpse. And if you're not — this is probably the month to fix that. Join The Club here.
