Why Going Outside Is the Best Wellness Habit You're Skipping (Backed by Science)

Why Going Outside Is the Best Wellness Habit You're Skipping (Backed by Science)

If your Apple Watch says “stand” more than “go outside,” this one’s for you.

We live in a moment where wellness looks like supplements, saunas, red‑light masks, and $7 matcha. And believe me, we love all of those things too. But, the people who actually live and breathe this space keep pointing back to the basics. As one of the biggest voices in wellness, Standford’s Casey Means, puts it, “We forget that we are solar-powered. Your circadian rhythm syncs to light.” And in the luxury‑wellness lane, Goop’s Gwyneth Paltrow reminds her audience that “the true tenets of wellness are all free: Being in nature, meditating, eating whole foods.” And guess what? The science agrees.

At Recess Pickleball, we’re here for the cute sets and color palettes. But our real agenda is sneakily more radical: building a life where “I’ll meet you outside” is a part of your routine. Returning to your roots, playing outside, and having fun.

We are literally solar‑powered.

Your body runs on light cues. Morning and daytime sunlight hitting your eyes and skin helps set your circadian rhythm, a.k.a. the internal clock that tells your brain when to wake up, focus, crave certain foods, and wind down at night. It’s why your mom would make you get some fresh air when you were sick as a little kid. When that system is synced, everything from mood to hormones to digestion works better. When it’s not, you’re basically jet‑lagged in your own time zone.

And right now, a lot of us are under‑fueling that system.

Fact 1: Younger adults really aren’t going outside

Gen Z adults spend about 49 minutes outside on a typical weekday, mostly just commuting, while Gen X averages 65 minutes. That means Gen Z is spending about 25% less time outdoors than Gen X—during years when their brains and nervous systems are under constant digital pressure.

It’s not that this generation “hates nature.” It’s that emails, DMs, and group chats feel urgent and going outside feels…optional. Less natural light, less fresh air, less unstructured movement all add up. That’s why voices across wellness keep steering us back to the most basic habit: step outside and get a little sun on your face.

Nature is the original mood stabilizer.

You don’t need a cabin in the woods or a beach trip (although don’t let us stop you!). Any outdoor time in any form is proven to be beneficial.

Fact 2: 10 minutes of outside time is enough to change your brain

A 2024 meta‑analysis of 45 studies found that as little as 10 minutes in nature (even a small city park or your apartment’s balcony) produced measurable short‑term improvements in mental health for adults. Ten minutes. Not a half‑day hike. Not a wellness retreat. Not “move to a farm and buy chickens.” To be honest, we can sometimes spend 4 or 5 times that amount of time on social media every day… so, it’s time we already have, just repurposed.

Clinicians echo it. One Mayo Clinic practitioner notes that there are many studies showing that time in nature improves mood, lowers anxiety, and boosts cognition and memory. Another group at UCLA Health put it painfully simply: you don’t have to be outside all day to reap nature’s benefits—which is great news, because you may be in back-to-back meetings glued to a Zoom screen all day.

For Recess, that’s the entire design brief. We’re not outfitting you for Everest; we’re outfitting you for:

  • A 10‑minute walk after lunch where you effortlessly close your move ring
  • A sunlight lap around the block between Zooms so you can take a little mental health reset
  • Sitting on a stoop or park bench while you scroll instead of doing it while you bed rot

Our pieces are built to be effortless so you don’t have to “get ready” to go outside, you’re already dressed for it.

Greenery literally changes your odds.

Go touch grass!!!

Fact 3: Living near greenery literally lowers your odds of dying

A meta‑analysis of over 8 million adults across seven countries found that for every 0.1 increase in neighborhood greenness, overall risk of death drops by about 4%. More trees, parks, and plants around you = lower all‑cause mortality.

It’s one reason high‑stress, high‑achieving people are suddenly obsessed with hot girl walks. If the neighborhood itself is a protective factor, you want to actually be out in it.

Recess as a lifestyle means:

  • Choosing the tree‑lined route to coffee instead of the “fastest route” your maps app bullies you into
  • Saying yes to a casual pickleball game or an after‑work park meet‑up instead of another “let’s just get drinks”
  • Treating outdoor time like skincare: non‑negotiable, built into your routine, sometimes done in a panic at 9 p.m. but done

More sun, more serotonin.

In a study of 101 adults, brain serotonin production climbed in step with hours of bright sunlight and was highest on long, sunny days. Serotonin is one of the key neurotransmitters tied to mood, motivation, and that “life is worth living” feeling.

So when wellness people talk about “sun on your face” like it’s therapy, they’re not really over-exaggerating. Your brain is literally using that light to make more of the stuff that keeps you steady.

Movement: your brain’s favorite drug.

Sunlight is one side of the story. The other is what happens when you actually move.

Dr. Wendy Suzuki, a neuroscientist at NYU, calls it straight: “Exercise is the most transformative thing you can do for your brain.”

Walking literally raises your serotonin.

In a 20‑week trial, women who did brisk walking three times a week showed significant boosts in blood serotonin, while a stretching group didn’t see those changes.

This is where Recess lives:

  • We design for taking a lap around the block while catching up on your podcast
  • We care more about you logging casual, joyful movement than chasing a PR
  • We want your clothes to feel so good you default to, “I’ll walk there” instead of “I’ll just call a car, it’s fine”

Movement should be fun and enjoyable! Our mantra: I’m someone who gets my brain right by going outside and moving, even just a little.

Put it all together and the case is pretty undeniable:

  • Younger adults are outside less than previous generations, and it’s costing us in mood and long‑term health.
  • Ten minutes in nature is enough to shift your mental state in a legitimately measurable way.
  • Living near greenery modestly but meaningfully lowers your risk of dying (kind of a big deal!).
  • Sunlight and walking literally boost serotonin and support your brain.
  • The most powerful wellness tools like light, air, movement, and green spaces are free and do not require a waitlist.

Or, as our girl Gwyneth likes to say, the true tenets of wellness are all free. Recess is what happens when you dress for those tenets on purpose.

We want you to go play outside. Being outside should be you, in a movement-forward outfit, taking your brain, your body, and your serotonin for a walk. And, you can still grab a $7 matcha on the way 🙂
